Known for his unconventional designs and shocking methods, his dramatic designs received numerous accolades, and he had avant-garde fashion clients such as Björk, Lady Gaga, and Rihanna, and also won British Designer of the Year four times.
Born the youngest of six children in a working-class area of London. His father was a taxi driver. At 16, he left school and was hired as an assistant tailor on Savile Row. He later worked at Romeo Gigli's atelier in Italy, but returned to London to study for his master's degree at Central Saint Martins.
In 1992, during his graduate collection at Central Saint Martins, his work caught the eye of Isabella Blow, an editor at "Vogue" and a well-known stylist, leading to his debut. At that time, Blow reportedly bought his entire graduate collection for an astonishing 5,000 pounds, even though McQueen was still unknown.
In 1996, he participated in London Fashion Week. In the same year, he was appointed as the designer for Givenchy, but in December 2000, he sold 51% of McQueen company shares to the Gucci Group. This caused a rift with Givenchy, which is under the LVMH umbrella. He was replaced as designer upon the expiration of his contract in October 2001.
He also designed for his second line, "McQ."
