-About MM6 Maison Margiela

Launched in 1997, MM6 Maison Margiela offers a contemporary wardrobe with wit and playfulness. Traditional sartorial items are deconstructed, and essential pieces are reinterpreted through unique processing, creating an original all-gender wardrobe.

Designer:

Martin Margiela

Born in Hasselt, Belgium on April 9, 1957, he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in 1977 and graduated in 1979. He was a classmate at this school with the designers known as the "Antwerp Six", and is often mentioned alongside these six: Dirk Bikkembergs, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Van Saene, and Marina Yee. Like the members of the "Antwerp Six", he was also influenced by "Comme des Garçons" (Rei Kawakubo), which was making waves at Paris Fashion Week in the 1980s.

Inspired by Jean Paul Gaultier's show in 1984, he joined Gaultier's atelier. He then worked as a design assistant for Gaultier until 1987[18]. In 1988, he launched his own brand "Maison Martin Margiela" and debuted at Paris Fashion Week. From 1997 to 2003, he also served as the designer for the fashion brand "Hermès" (women's collection)[.

He was known as a mysterious figure throughout his career, with no photos appearing after one taken in 1997. According to the representative of Diesel, the company that owns the "Martin Margiela" brand, he has had no involvement with the "Martin Margiela" brand since the 2008 collection, which marked its 20th anniversary, and is in a state of retirement. In 2019, he appeared in the documentary film "Martin Margiela: In His Own Words" (released in Japan in 2021 as "Margiela Speaks 'Martin Margiela'"). In 2021, he joined the contemporary art gallery "Zeno X Gallery" (Antwerp).
