Born on April 9 , 1957 in Genk , Belgium, he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1977 and graduated in 1979. He was a classmate of the designers known as the " Antwerp Six ," and is therefore often referred to alongside them: Dirk Bikkembergs , Ann Demeulemeester , Walter Van Beirendonck , Dries Van Noten , Dirk Van Seyne , and Marina Yi . Like the other members of the "Antwerp Six," he was influenced by Comme des Garçons ( Rei Kawakubo ), which was all the rage at the Paris Collections in the 1980s.
In 1984, he was impressed by a Jean-Paul Gaultier show he attended and joined Gaultier's atelier. He worked as a design assistant for Gaultier until 1987. [ 18 ] In 1988, he launched his own brand, Maison Martin Margiela, and made his debut at the Paris Collection. From 1997 to 2003, he also served as designer for the fashion brand Hermès (women's collection).
He has been known as a mysterious figure throughout his career, with no photographs of him appearing since a single one taken in 1997. According to a representative of Diesel, which owns the Martin Margiela brand, he has not been involved with the brand since the 2008 collection, marking the 20th anniversary of the brand's founding, and is in a state of retirement. In 2019, he appeared in the documentary film "Martin Margiela: In His Own Words" (to be released in Japan in 2021 as "Martin Margiela Speaks 'Martin Margiela'"). In 2021, he became affiliated with the contemporary art gallery "Zeno X Gallery" (Antwerp).
