Designer: Alexander McQueen
Known for his unconventional designs and shocking approach, his dramatic designs have received numerous accolades, and he has had a clientele with avant-garde fashion styles including Björk , Lady Gaga and Rihanna , and he has been named British Designer of the Year four times.
Born in the working-class of London, he was the youngest of six children. His father was a taxi driver. He left school at the age of 16 and was hired as an assistant to a tailor on Savile Row . He then worked at Romeo Gigli's atelier in Italy, before returning to London to study for a master's degree at Central Saint Martins .
In 1992, during his graduation collection at Central Saint Martins , he caught the eye of Isabella Blow , a Vogue editor and stylist , and this led to his debut. At the time, McQueen was still unknown, but Blow bought his entire graduation collection for the extraordinary price of 5,000 pounds. .
He participated in the London Collection in 1996. That same year, he was appointed designer for Givenchy , but in December 2000, he sold 51% of his shares in McQueen to the Gucci Group. This caused a rift with Givenchy, which is under the umbrella of LVMH. He was replaced as designer when his contract expired in October 2001.
He also designed a second line called McQ.
